Green Lake Nutrition

Green Lake Nutrition is a full service nutrition and food counseling practice that aims to support clients in meeting their health goals and to help them feel empowered in their food and lifestyle choices. We provide individualized nutrition education, treatment planning, lab analysis, menu planning, grocery tours, cooking classes, motivational counseling, support groups, and life coaching.

Julie Starkel, MS, MBA, RD, CD

Julie has followed her passion for nutrition throughout her career, both with her education and her professional work. Her areas of interest include gastrointestinal health, sports nutrition, autoimmune disease management, weight loss and general health. She earned a Master of Science in Whole Foods Clinical Nutrition at Bastyr University, where she also completed her dietetic internship. She is a Registered and Certified Dietitian (RD/CD), a member of the American Dietetic Association, the Nutrition in Complementary Care practice group, and the Institute for Functional Medicine. Previously, she earned her MBA and BA in International Business, and has lived and worked in South America and Europe for several years. Her background includes the fitness, food, and nutritional supplement industries. Julie welcomes her clients’ goals and works together with them to achieve them through nutrition education, counseling support and good food ideas.

Ying Yu, MS, CN, CHHC

Ying’s work is a unique approach that integrates nutrition therapy with nourishment psychology. Her area of focus is in personal growth through food and nourishment. She believes that to sustain long-term lifestyle change, we need to expand our thinking, attitudes, self-concept, and ways of coping to keep up with physical improvements. Ying’s goal is to help clients maintain food and lifestyle changes through building their nutrition knowledge, mind-body awareness, self-compassion, flexible thinking, emotional coping skills, and confidence in food choices. Ying is a Certified Nutritionist, Registered Mental Health Counselor, and Certified Holistic Health Counselor, who’s a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and Seattle Counselors Association. She earned her Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Health Psychology from Bastyr University, her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Amherst College, and her Certificate in Holistic Health Counseling from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She is also a Transformational Nourishment Coach trained under Hale Sofia Schatz, author of If The Buddha Came To Dinner: How To Nourish Your Body To Feed Your Spirit.

Barlean Balance

Barlean Balance offers personal strength training with the goal that each and every client to gets to know their own body at a cellular level and to create play in that process.

Ila Barlean

Ila was born in Canada and raised in a single parent family in Bellingham, Washington. An energetic child, Ila was enrolled in track and field at the age of six. She quickly excelled in this sport as a high jumper, hurdles, long jumper, 100 meter and 200 meter, even placing second in the 100 meter at the Junior Olympics. Ankle and knee injuries switched Ila’s focus to swimming placing as a double champion in high school and earned a four year scholarship for swimming to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. A choice to move and work in Japan instead of Canada to train for the Olympics ended her swimming career but opened her interest in nutrition and its affects on her training. Returning to the state, Ila began training her first clients and has completed in three bodybuilding shows and placed 5 th, 7 th and 2 nd. She also enjoys outrigger canoeing, Olympic lifting, running, belly dancing and gymnastics.

Massage Therapists

Massage is an important component of training.  It enhances performance, decreases recovery time, increases circulation, reduces stress, alleviates muscle tension, relaxes, and rejuvenates!

Alis Brown, LMP

I have 12 years of experience relieving pain, improving circulation, and accelerating healing and athletic performance using Structural Integration, Shiatsu and Visceral Manipulation. I call my work Full Body Balancing; it centers around the realignment of fascia (myofascial release) and the release of pressure points (shiatsu/acupressure).

I am a graduate of Brian Utting School of Massage and have completed more than 1800 hours of specialized training in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Massage Therapy Techniques including advanced certification in: Structural Integration, Myofascial Release, Shiatsu, Deep Muscle Therapy and Reflexology.

I am a fully accredited Professional Health Care Provider, I am licensed by the state of Washington to provide Massage Therapy, and I am a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).

Michelle Gies, LMP

I am a 2004 graduate of the Brenneke School of Massage where I completed the Extended Professional Licensing program. I am continuously increasing my knowledge and skills as a Massage Practitioner. I have received additional training in specific Injury Treatment, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point, Maternity massage, and Hot Stone massage. Massage is the perfect way to; speed muscle recovery after a run, alleviate sore and tired muscles after a workout, relieve tension caused by increased stress, and increase relaxation while improving the circulation.

I am a fully accredited Professional Health Care Provider. I am both Washington State and nationally certified, and I am a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA).
